Kites Will Be Flown
A recent mural is painted by MUBI for the movie “Uçurtmayı Vurmasınlar” (Don’t Let Them Shoot the Kite) in Beyoğlu. Below is a video that I took of it recently.
There was rain, and there were windows. It reminded me of Lupe Fiasco’s lines in “ON FAUX NEM”:
I’ve admired many cities through the windows of hotels
From the window of a plane, I’ve seen the window of a cell
The plane started to fly, the rain started to fell
That’s LaGuardia and Rikers, a airport next to a jail
I took a picture looked like my window was crying
‘Cause it was sad that all they saw every day was somebody flying
And they was trapped, this shit is wack
Barış knows the kite at the end, hopefully freedom afterwards as well.
At the end of the movie, the gathering in the yard is rejoiced at the sight of the kite being flown by İnci, to be disrupted by a man uttering the unfathomable words Vurun! ‘Shoot it!’ The people get quiet in an instant, as the sheer impossibility of a person even to think of doing such a thing disables them. Such things happen in this world that make a sane person stop in complete shock, unable to move. A similar thing happened to me watching this video.
Speech is withdrawn off a person
In hearing speech deemed impossible
A few seconds before even to occur
To any mind, let alone utter.
